Member of Parliament - Cheltenham

Born in 1976 and raised in the village of Foxcote, Alex Chalk was elected to parliament for the first time in 2015. Prior to becoming an MP, Alex was educated at Oxford and subsequently worked as a barrister for thirteen years, specialising in counter-terrorism, homicide and serious fraud cases.

Whilst building his legal career in London, Alex was twice elected as a councillor in Hammersmith and Fulham, where he chaired the Planning Committee for four years. During this time he helped adjudicate on multi-billion pound planning applications which brought investment and regeneration to many deprived areas, and also helped drive down council tax to historically-low levels. On this experience Alex has said, “It was an invaluable training, but that apprenticeship is now over. I have come back home, and I want to put my skills to use to help make Cheltenham the greatest town in Britain.”

On May 7th 2015, Alex defeated Cheltenham’s incumbent MP, Martin Horwood, by over 6500 votes, thus declaring Cheltenham a Conservative seat for the first time in 23 years.
